Instruments of the orchestra

A symphony orchestra has four families: strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. How an instrument makes its sound decides which family it belongs to.

Years 5-6 (primary)Ages 10 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a music teacher.

Why

Why does a metal saxophone belong to the woodwind family?

An orchestra sometimes has more than eighty musicians. They do not just sit anywhere: they sit in families, with the instruments that make sound the same way grouped together.

A family does not depend on the material but on how the sound is made. That is why the saxophone, with its reed, sits with the woodwind.
