Sound is vibration: pitch and volume
Every sound is something vibrating. The faster it vibrates, the higher the pitch, measured in hertz. The bigger the vibration, the louder. An octave higher is twice as fast.
You can start here straight away: you need nothing first.
Why
Why does a thick guitar string sound low and a thin one high?
Put your hand on your throat and sing: you feel it buzz. Tap a glass and watch the water: it ripples. Sound is always something moving back and forth.
That movement pushes the air, and the air pushes against your eardrum. How it vibrates decides what you hear: high or low, loud or soft.
