Music you can hear and read.
Why Maat
Music is not a row of symbols to learn by heart. It is listening, feeling and understanding why something sounds the way it does: why you clap along, why a chord sounds sad, why the chorus comes back. Maat always starts from what you hear.
Four blocks, always in the same order
Why, See it and hear it, Get it, Do it. Then the pitfalls, where you meet it in real life and a bit of history. Every topic shows what you need to know first and what comes next.
Exercises that never run out
Generators make every exercise: different notes, bars, intervals and chords each time, with the right answer, a hint and a worked solution. The music theory is calculated and tested, thousands of exercises per topic.
Sound from the browser
All the sound in Maat is made in your browser: a simple piano, drums and imitated instruments, with no sound files or recordings from elsewhere. Sound only starts when you press a button, and you can solve every exercise without sound too, with the stave or the picture. We draw the staves ourselves.
Who makes Maat
Maat is made by Neal Van de Velde (nealvdv), who also made Draad, Ruit and the other Kaft apps. Questions, mistakes or ideas are always welcome.
Calm and private
No ads, no tracking, no required account, no streaks or notifications that make you feel guilty. Maat never uses your microphone. What you can do is kept only on your own device.
What does Draft mean?
A topic labelled Draft has been written with care, but not yet checked by a music teacher. Only after that check does the label go. If you see a mistake, let us know.

Maat and Kaft
Maat belongs to Kaft, a family of learning apps with an app for each subject. Part of Maat is free, for the rest we ask a fair price. That keeps Maat free of ads and tracking.

The learning path and the first 3 topics are free. For all of Maat you choose one of these plans:

Each app has its own subject and its own face, with the same way of working: understanding over cramming, calm and without ads.
Where we come from
Maat is made from a Christian conviction: music is a gift to share, and every child is valuable, including those who think they are not musical. The content itself is ordinary, neutral music theory; where church music appears, it is as a factual part of music history. What you notice is the way: patient, honest and with care.
