Harmony and sound

Voices and choir

A choir divides into soprano, alto, tenor and bass, from high to low. Together they sing in four parts: each voice its own line, together one chord.

Secondary, first stageAges 11 to 16Draft: Not yet checked by a music teacher.

Why

Why does everyone in a choir not simply sing the melody?

Every voice has a range where it sounds free and beautiful. A low male voice cannot reach the high notes of a children's song without straining.

By dividing the choir, everyone sings in their own range, and different notes sound at the same time: that is how voices make chords.
