Musical form: ABA, rondo and chorus

Music is built from sections that return or change. You write the form with letters: ABA, rondo ABACA, or verse and chorus as in a pop song.

Secondary, first stageAges 11 to 15Draft: Not yet checked by a music teacher.

Why

Why can you sing along with the chorus after hearing a song only once?

A piece of music is not a long row of notes without a plan. It has sections, the way a story has chapters, and some sections come back.

Repetition helps you find your way: you recognise something and you know where you are. Variety keeps it exciting. Form is the balance between the two.
