Scales: major and minor

A scale puts eight notes in a fixed pattern of tones and semitones. Major sounds bright, minor darker. The pattern decides which sharps or flats you need.

Secondary, first stageAges 11 to 15Draft: Not yet checked by a music teacher.

Why

Why does one piece sound cheerful and another sad, even though the notes are almost the same?

Almost every melody uses a fixed set of seven notes: the scale. Which set you choose colours the whole piece.

The difference lies in where the small steps, the semitones, fall. One different step turns bright into dark.
