Listening to music

Dynamics and articulation

Dynamics are how loudly or softly you play, from pp to ff, with crescendo and decrescendo in between. Articulation is how you play a note: smooth, short or accented.

Years 5-6 (primary)Ages 10 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a music teacher.

Why

Why do you get goosebumps when a quiet piece suddenly becomes very loud?

Music lives on contrast. The same notes sound exciting when they slowly swell, and mysterious when they stay very quiet.

That is why composers write signs next to the notes: how loud, and how to start each note. If you read them, you play not only the right notes but also the story.
