Harmony and sound
Chords and accompaniment
A triad stacks two thirds: root, third and fifth. Major sounds bright, minor darker. With just three chords, I, IV and V, you can accompany lots of songs.
What you need first
Why
How can a guitarist get a whole campfire singing along with only three chords?
Under a melody there are often several notes sounding at once: a chord. It gives the melody a floor to stand on and a colour.
Most songs switch between only a few chords. If you know those few, you can play along with far more music than you would think.
